Dear Union of Southern Services Workers, and Durham Environmental Coalition. And all the readers of the blog.
Feel free to share how your organization shares a passion in fighting for equality.
Organize the South, refers to campaigns to unionize workers in traditionally low-wage industries in the South.
They advocat for better pay and benefits and a seat at the desision making table. These are the things that everyone should have. We have an unjust caste system in America. We should be striving for equality, it’s not fair if some people make little and others make more when we all wake up every morning and go to work, just like everyone else.
We need equality in pay and we need to work together on all levels of the society. Organizing means many things. It means labor organizing, and social movements.
Labor organizing means, that employees pull together to better their pay and working conditions. Collective bargaining is when employees present a unified front to have more leverage. Improving working conditions means four things, fair wages, safe and healthy working conditions, reasonable working hours, and job security.
Social movements are when when people act together as a group instead of as individuals. The goal can be to cause social change raise minimum wage. They are characterized by things like challenging power structures, and with summits, education and demonstrations. The goal is to influence laws, social norms, and policies.
These movements include grassroots organizing, and community out reach.
Finally these movements make legal challenges to unfair labor practices, and focus on low wage workers such as service, retail, manufacturing. The goal is to empower workers, raise wages, and fight for better working conditions and benefits.
We all need to pull together to save the environment. Part of the solution is equality. People need to search for work that is healthy for employees. We cannot take it when the employer doesn’t pay workers, so badly, that it effects someone’s health. Employee health and environmental health go hand in hand.
We need to get things organized and Garden Rangers is it. With the right vision and mission garden rangers could transform the green economy.
What kind of changes would you like to see happen?
Garden rangers could be a fight for local farms from start to finish. The result is local products that have a big marketing power. What kind of products would you like to see produced by a nonprofit like Union of Southern Service Workers?
