Dear Farmer Food Share and Table, and Whole Foods, and all readers of the blog.
Local food is better for the environment because it lowers your carbon footprint. This is because you do not have to burn gas to transport the products. Also local food requires less inputs meaning that it takes less things like fertilizer for instance to make things grow. The soil is simply better on local farms, so they don’t need fertilizer which costs money. Larger fields are plowed once a year which is bad for the soil, because of erosion. Local farms can be grown with out a tractor and no-till fields conserve the soil.
Local food is also less processed. This means that it has fewer addictives which makes the meal healthier. Processed food has many different chemicals added to it. Chemicals are not healthy, but we use many of them anyway. Some chemicals make the shelf life last longer to survive the costs of long shipping. Also there are chemicals added to the food to make it taste better. It is not an coincidence food that travels the distance looses the flavor. Seasonal food, is much more natural, and without the added chemicals.
Dear non profits,
How do you encourage someone to eat healthier and more local?
How can garden rangers be a local food success?
