Dear Carrboro Farmers Market, Whole Foods, and all the readers of the blog.
Food sovereignty means being involved in the food process from start to finish. This creates community and healthier food too.
What we really need is an economy that builds community. We need to be friends with the growers who deliver produce to grocery stores and kitchens. Also we need to make friends with the cooks and farmers that meet together at the farmers markets to pick up the food. This is is the community and culture that we need. Going to work all day and then watching tv all weekend is not really going to satisfy our needs. We need to be more connected to our food and it’s many hands that it passes through to come to us.
Right now we are missing the entire process. Food gets harvested with tractors, then gets shipped with a semi truck, and dropped in hot grease by an employee. This misses all the human interactions in between. Our organization would be different. We could reach out to people who need something to do. Then alternate between harvesting, cooking and taking the food to market! Having a community garden would transform the idea behind local food sovereignty.
One way to get involved in the community is to volunteer, and be part of food sovereignty. Last year our organization gave away over two hundred seedlings to our local food bank. This is a way that all people could be a part of the food process from start to finish. This year our organization is working with the Union of Southern Service workers to give away five hundred seedlings to fast food workers.
Dear Non Profit
Can you describe how your community might be closer to attaining ‘food security’ by working with an organization like garden rangers?
